Air pollution: BMW to convert hybrid cars to electric-only

German car maker BMW says it will convert its hybrid cars to an electric-only mode to tackle heavy pollution  in inner-city areas.

It is believed that this plan would help the vehicles compete with pure battery-driven rivals as cities now try to create emissions-free zones.

“The car switches off the combustion engine automatically,” said BMW’s board member for development, Klaus Froehlich.

Major Cities like London and Paris have commenced the restriction of combustion engine vehicles due to pollution.

While the car maker may have attempted to be an ear;y bed investor in a bid to capture potential markets, it must grapple with general public indifference to electric cars, as most car buyers for now prefer tend to prefer hybrid cars due to the shortage of electric charging spots across Europe and North America.
